I Hear Latex Toppers are Good
Customers ask us all the time about Latex Mattress Toppers. In most cases, they’ve heard good things from a friend or some kind of advertisement – and are looking into the subject to see if there’s anything that might give them a more comfortable bed and a more restful sleep.
What is Dunlop, What is Talalay?
Both are processes for manufacturing a finished latex product. Dunlop is the original process which has been used in the bedding industry to make 100% Natural Dunlop Latex Toppers for decades. Because these toppers are manufactured in the countries where rubber trees grow, and also because the process is original, simpler, and with less steps and processes, the finished product tends to be a little bit firmer than comparable Talalay Latex.
And for all those who are very sensitive and very concerned about their bedding, there is now a line of 100% Natural Organic Dunlop Latex. Although available in limited densities, it is Certified Organic for source ingredients, process, and finished product -- and is your best guarantee of absolute purity.
Talalay Latex is a more modern process, and the factories are normally in the countries where the latex toppers are going to be used. So latex rubber sap has to be stabilized for transport. Beyond this, if someone wants to sell you a piece of Talalay Latex without any clear indication as to its makeup, it is more than likely going to be the Original Talalay, which is a blend of botanical latex from the Hevea brasiliensis rubber tree and man-made SBR Rubber. If you want 100% Natural Talalay Latex, you have to ask for that specifically.
Which is Best?
Many people come looking for a recommended product, and referrals are always a good way to go. If you’ve read about latex online, you may also come in with your own good ideas of what suits your needs and preferences.
In general, Level of Support and Naturalness are two defining factors that will help you reach a decision more quickly. As well, 100% Natural Latex of either manufacture comes in ILD or firmness RANGES, where Original Talalay (Blended) is available in specific firmness ratings. That’s one of the advantages of the more modern process and formulation.
Names such as “soft”, “medium-soft”, and so forth are very useful indicators for those who aren’t familiar with the numeric indexing of ILDs “14, 19, etc” -- and the range starts with 14 ILD which is very soft and extends all the way up to 44 ILD which is very firm (Original Talalay). If you have an idea what you’re looking for but aren’t quite sure, speak with a Sales Representative and ask for Samples.
A 2” or 3” latex topper can add a new dimension of support and comfort to an existing bed. The thicker toppers are available for those who are looking for a greater depth of support and comfort, those who are of heavier body weights, and those who are side sleepers. And make sure to use some sort of mattress cover to protect your new topper from accidental damages, and to help keep it cleaner.
